Debate Over UML Reorganization Intensifies as Leaders Question Oli’s Leadership
Debate over CPN-UML’s reorganization has intensified as leaders increasingly question party chair KP Sharma Oli’s leadership after the party’s poor election performance.
Debate over the reorganization of CPN-UML has intensified as internal dissatisfaction within the party becomes more visible. UML Election Department Chief Dr. Vijay Subba wrote on social media that if honest and sidelined leaders are not brought into the party leadership, the party may have to wait for its own decline. His statement has been seen as a reflection of the growing frustration inside UML. After the party’s poor performance in the last parliamentary election, a taskforce formed to suggest party reorganization has been collecting feedback from different provinces.
During the feedback collection in Bagmati and Koshi provinces, voices calling for reorganization with leadership change were strongly raised. Some leaders have argued that party chair KP Sharma Oli should be replaced, while others say Oli alone should not be blamed for the current situation. UML leaders say both views have appeared almost equally during internal discussions. After Oli was pushed out of power following the Gen-Z movement, calls for leadership change had grown inside the party. Leaders including Bishnu Paudel, Shankar Pokharel, Prithvi Subba Gurung and Raghuvir Mahaseth later stood against Oli in the secretariat meeting. A 15-member reorganization suggestion taskforce led by Ram Bahadur Thapa was then formed. The taskforce is scheduled to collect provincial suggestions until Ashar 19 and submit its report to the party secretariat after its meeting on Ashar 22.
