Licenses With Less Than One Year Validity to Be Printed Only After Renewal

The Department of Transport Management has said driving licenses with less than one year of validity will be printed only after renewal. Out of 2.9 million old-date driving licenses, around 350,000 will not be printed immediately because their validity is less than one year. However, if a license is urgently needed, it can be printed and provided on the basis of an application. The department said such licenses would take time to print and send to offices, while many license holders also delay collecting them. Since the current license validity is five years, printing licenses that are close to expiry would again require renewal soon.

Department Director Keshav Khatiwada said around 350,000 licenses were found to have less than one year of validity while checking the system during printing. He said 60 to 70 percent of those license holders are abroad. According to Khatiwada, 1,300 expired licenses were found last Friday alone. The system now shows how much validity each license has, and licenses with less than one year remaining are not being sent for printing. From Shrawan 14, 2080, a 10-year validity period has been implemented instead of five years. Of the 2.9 million licenses, 1,802,248 have already been printed, 88,495 are in process and 1,009,257 remain to be printed. The department had earlier signed an agreement with the Security Printing Center to print 1.2 million licenses, while a second-phase agreement was signed to print the remaining 1.7 million licenses by Ashar 32.
