Probe Report Says No Police Assault in Shreekrishna Bishwakarma Custody Death

Home Minister Sudan Gurung has said a probe committee was formed to investigate the death of Shreekrishna Bishwakarma in Sindhuli police custody and that the report has already been received. Responding to a question raised by National Assembly member Bhuwan Bahadur Sunar in today’s meeting, Minister Gurung said the report did not show that Bishwakarma was assaulted by police. He said the report states that police did not inflict any physical or mental torture on Bishwakarma while he was in custody.

Minister Gurung said the Home Ministry has taken the matter seriously and will provide further information if new facts emerge. He also informed the meeting that a Dalit cell has been brought into operation within Nepal Police. During the meeting, National Assembly member Sunar raised concerns about caste-based discrimination, including incidents of killing and assault linked to inter-caste marriage. He also questioned how Bishwakarma could have died by suicide in a custody room without a table or chair, asking how he could have reached a height of seven feet. National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal also read out a letter received from the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.
